How we train
What is Force-Free, Positive Reinforcement Training?
Force-free or positive reinforcement training focuses on rewarding behaviours you want to encourage, making them more likely to happen again. Rooted in science-backed principles, this approach prioritises building trust and communication between dogs and their parents/guardians.
By using reinforcers such as treats, toys, praise, or play, dogs learn in a stress-free, enjoyable way. Unlike punishment or aversive methods—which harm a dog’s emotional well-being and weaken trust—positive reinforcement helps create a strong, lasting bond.
An essential part of this training is recognising, understanding, and respecting a dog’s emotions. Just like humans, dogs experience a range of feelings, and their ability to learn is closely tied to their emotional state.
By observing body language and stress signals—such as lip licking, yawning, or tail position—trainers and parents/guardians can better understand a dog’s mood and needs. A relaxed, happy dog is far more receptive to learning than one experiencing fear or frustration.
This compassionate, effective training method builds confident, well-adjusted dogs while strengthening the bond between dog and parent/guardian.
Incorporating Free Work
Free work is an enriching and pressure-free training technique that lets dogs explore their environment at their own pace. It involves setting up sensory activities like sniffing, foraging, or navigating different textures and objects.
By giving dogs the freedom to make their own choices, free work helps build their confidence and reduce stress, making them feel more comfortable in a variety of situations.
This approach also provides valuable insights for trainers and parents/guardians, helping them better understand their dog’s preferences, sensitivities, and body language.
When combined with positive reinforcement, free work forms a holistic training method that not only encourages desired behaviours but also nurtures your dog’s mental and emotional well-being. This powerful combination strengthens the bond between you and your dog, creating a cooperative, joyful, and harmonious relationship.
